Bay and Bow Windows
Projection Windows extend and protrude from the home to brighten rooms and deepen their connection to nature. Like most custom windows, they capture natural light and provide beautiful outdoor views. Unlike other types of windows, bay and bow windows physically add additional space to your home, helping you live more comfortably.
The most popular styles of projection windows are bay and bow windows. Both share a few similarities, including their abilities to increase your home’s energy efficiency and curb appeal. It is important to understand the advantages of each before deciding which is right for you.
Bay Windows are a great way to increase airflow.
Bay Windows are fully functional. Unlike other projection window styles, they can easily be opened or closed to increase airflow and ventilation in the home. They can operate due to their design. Bay windows combine 3 or more window panels, which are set at angles, with the centerpiece being the widest.
Usually, the centerpiece is a stationary picture window, positioned to completely transform your home and offer a vast view outdoors. Yet the other panels — usually casement or double hung windows — include two operating sashes.
- 3 panels
- Angled curve
- Can be operational
- Efficient ventilation
Bow Windows are better suited to maximize your view.
Bow Windows are not operational. They cannot be opened or closed to allow fresh air into the home. Instead, they act as stationary portals through which sunlight can enter, adding a 3-Dimensional element to your home’s exterior.
The bow windows design is a combination of 4 to 6 window panels. These are set side by side, and curved to create a rounded appearance. This gives them a wider view than bay windows.
As a result, bow windows have less of a protrusion, leading to a better view of the outdoors. This deeper connection to nature may also decrease the possibilities for increased living space within the home.
- 4-6 panels
- Rounded curve
- Non-operational
- Wide, expansive view
